  • Physik Instrumente (PI), a premium supplier of precision motion systems and air bearings for alignment, precision motion, metrology and automation applications, offers a new 6-axis photonics alignment system.

    The low-profile, 6DOF photonic alignment platform enables the highest-precision alignment and probing applications, while providing significantly higher throughput than traditional motorized alignment stages. Based on a direct-drive architecture with completely friction-free bearings and the latest, firmware-based high-speed alignment algorithms, the F-716 system is ideal for high-volume production-scale testing.

    ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Alignment Controller with On-Board Ultra-Fast Scan and Align Algorithms

    An ACS-based motion controller with novel, embedded alignment algorithms is the heart of the new photonics alignment system. The controller features embedded ultra-fast scan and alignment routines, including serpentine and circular scans, as well as a fast hill-climb gradient search. Embedded alignment routines provide higher performance since communication with an external host computer is not required. The advanced photonics alignment system can handle quasi-gaussian profiles, top-hat profiles, and other typical optical power distributions.

    Why Use Air Bearing Stages?

    Air bearing stages utilize a cushion of air instead of traditional, contacting roller or ball bearings, eliminating friction, the need for lubricants, and allowing for smooth, controlled movement with exceptional guiding accuracy. The lack of friction and lubricants also makes air-bearing based motion and positioning systems an ideal match for clean-room applications.

  • The H-840 hexapod series is universally applicable for tasks in precision positioning. Some variants are optimized for high dynamics and can for example, be used for simulating motion whereas models with gearhead support are suitable for heavier loads.
    The parallel-kinematic design for six degrees of freedom makes it significantly more compact and stiffer than comparable serial kinematic systems. Their advantages over serial, i.e., stacked systems, are mainly the much better path accuracy and repeatability.
    In addition, the moved mass is lower and allows improved dynamics performance and is the same for all motion axes. Cable management is not a problem because cables are not moved.

  • The multilayer cofiring technology is a particularly innovative manufacturing process. The first step is to cast tapes of piezoceramic materials which are then provided with electrodes while still in the green state. Many single tapes are laminated together to give a piezo element, which is then sintered together with contact electrodes in a single process step.

    The patented design comprises an all-ceramic outer layer of the actuator, which acts as insulation. Any further coatings, made of polymer materials, for example, are therefore not required. This means that PICMA® piezo actuators remain stable even when subjected to high dynamic loads. They achieve a reliability and a lifetime which is ten times higher than that of conventional multilayer piezo actuators.

    The more fine-grained the ceramic material used, the thinner the multiple layers that can be produced.
