  • ENX 16 RIO encoder from maxon motor

    maxon motor presents a top-of-the-range high-resolution encoder. The ENX 16 RIO offers an impressive resolution of up to 65,536 counts per turn in a compact and rugged housing.

    Requirements on encoders are becoming more and more demanding. This applies particularly to positioning applications with precision constant-speed control, where increasingly compact housings need to accommodate an ever greater number of electrical contacts. maxon motor solves this problem with its new ENX 16 RIO optical encoder. It is a mere 16 millimeters in size and offers a resolution of up to 65,536 counts per turn, making it ideal for the precise position and velocity control of DC motors.

    The new maxon ENX 16 RIO encoder (Reflective, Interpolated, Optical) fulfills all the requirements for a high-resolution optical encoder in a compact design. The resolution can be configured at the factory or online. With 16 millimeters outer diameter and 7 millimeters overall length, the housing is mechanically robust and protected from dust due to its injection-molded construction. The operating temperature range is -40 °C to +100 °C.

    Easily configured online for combinations with maxon motors

    The encoder can be combined and configured with matching drives online. It fits the new brushless EC-i 30 motors and the brushed DCX motors (diameters of 16 millimeters and up). The counts per turn and the electrical interface of the ENX 16 RIO encoder are also configurable online.     The EC-i 52mm brushless DC motor from maxon has had the iron-wound internal rotor motor redesigned from 7 pole pairs to 8 pole pairs. This significantly reduces the vibration and noise output of the DC motor. Available in three voltage outputs, 18, 24 and 48V the 52mm 180 W brushless DC motors produce up to 6,000 rpm.

    With a correspondingly optimized magnet ring, the brushless EC-i motors with iron windings offer a very high torque density and a low cogging torque. The multi-pole internal rotor is extremely dynamic. It has a solid design, with a welded stainless steel flange and housing, making this brushless DC motor suitable for a wide range of applications such as rotary actuators, valves, robotic joints and process control.

  • Plug-in board for maxon EPOS4 controllers

    Your drive specialist, maxon motor, is equipping its EPOS4 positioning controllers with additional connectivity options. They can now be integrated into any EtherCAT network as a slave by using an expansion board.

    EPOS4 positioning controllers by maxon motor are now able to communicate via EtherCAT using the CoE standard (CAN application layer over EtherCAT). The EtherCAT card can be combined with the EPOS4 controllers in a housing, as well as with all EPOS4 modules. EPOS4 Compact designs with EtherCAT versions will follow at a later date. This expansion for the world of Ethernet-based communication protocols further expands the areas of application for the compact positioning controllers. For example, in applications where short cycle times are important in synchronized multi-axis systems.

  • Motors used in robotics must be lightweight while simultaneously providing high torque in order for arms and grippers to move dynamically. This is why Swiss drive specialist maxon motor is offering a new solution: The tried and tested brushless flat motors as frameless kits. This gives rise to a number of benefits.

    DC motors cannot always be optimally integrated into a structure. In robot joints for example, space and weight are priority considerations that take standard solutions to their limits. This is why drive specialist maxon motor developed an alternative for the growing robotics market and is now offering its brushless flat motors (EC flat) as frameless kits. Rotor and stator are delivered separately, without bearings and motor shaft, and connected only when the components are assembled. This offers our customers the best of both worlds: high torque density and minimum volume. With outer diameters of only 43 to 90 mm, the EC flat series' brushless flat motors are extremely compact. Designed as external rotor motors, they offer plenty of space inside for cable glands. maxon delivers them with Hall sensors for easy control.

    Engineers can integrate maxon frameless motors in robotic joints and save space. This has the following benefits:

  • maxon motor's EPOS range of controllers has been very successful in the marketplace. Since its launch in 2005, more than 100,000 units are in use worldwide. To build upon this success, the Swiss drive specialist launches the EPOS4 as the next generation of positioning controllers. The first product in maxon's new line is the high-performance EPOS4 module with detachable pin headers and two different power ratings. With a connector board, the modules can be combined into a ready-to-install compact solution. The position controllers are suitable for efficient and dynamic control of brushed DC motors and brushless BLDC motors (EC motors) with Hall sensors and encoders up to 750 W continuous power and 1500 W peak power.
