As the semiconductor industry is characterized by a number of liquid flow processes in which different abrasive, adherent, corrosive and ultra-pure liquids are applied, it is of utmost importance to keep these processes safe, stable, and of high quality. SEMIFLOW flow meters are specifically designed to meet the sector-specific demand of the semiconductor industry. The sensors are available globally throughout the SONOTEC distribution network.

SEMIFLOW flow sensors are industry-proven cutting-edge meters combining the need for a robust design with an innovative clamp-on design to eliminate any risks of contamination and leakages without the hassle of system downtimes. Due to their compact housing with onboard electronics and analysis unit, the flow meters are as small as a single transducer and can thus easily integrate into existing process chains and architectures. SEMIFLOW sensors are available in different sensor and channel sizes for a wide range of tube sizes. They are perfectly suited for PFA, PTFE and other hard plastic tubes and pipes.

Field-proven technology for use in complex semiconductor applications

Liquid flow measurement plays an important role in wafer manufacturing where several abrasive, adherent, and corrosive liquids are used in different wet processes. During a single wafer or batch cleaning process, for example, it is crucial to monitor the flow of the cleaning solution. In case it is under- or overdosed, the cleaning process must be repeated and additional resources are required. At worst, the wafers become defective and a huge loss in value is incurred. A precise flow measurement is therefore decisive for the efficient use of production resources. Beside their integration into wafer cleaning equipment, SEMIFLOW flow meters have also been successfully implemented into lithography and mixing equipment, chemical supply systems, and slurry lines.

SONOTEC has been conducting business activities in non-contact ultrasonic flow measurement devices for decades

The development of SEMIFLOW sensors benefits from decades of experience in designing non-contact ultrasonic flow sensors for highly sensitive applications in biopharma as well as for medical devices with strict safety regulations. Thus, certain sensor performance features such as high accuracy real-time instantaneous flow measurements of up to 400 L/min, the implementation of a volume-totalizer, a broad range of standard industrial interfaces, and the expertise in handling a wide range of tubing properties and geometries were successfully be adopted to the SEMIFLOW sensor series.

Physical principle utilized by ultrasonic SEMIFLOW flow meters

SEMIFLOW sensors are equipped with four ultrasonic transducers arranged in an X-pattern. Emitting pulsating ultrasonic waves in a given frequency from one side to the other, the transducers measure the time of flight of the ultrasonic wave with and against the flow direction of the liquid. The resulting time difference is directly proportional to the mean flow velocity. The flow volume results from the product of this mean flow velocity and the cross-sectional area of the tubing.

The transit-time method causes neither a pressure drop in the tube nor a risk of leakages. When appropriately calibrated, transit time can work on almost all liquids viscosity, density, color, and electromagnetic properties of fluids. Ions and particulate matter are not required to calculate the measurement.

The SEMIFLOW Ex1 Set opens a new product category of intrinsically safe ultrasonic flow sensors with control gear for non-contact liquid flow measurement on small and midsize rigid plastic tubes to ensure safe operation in hazardous areas. SEMIFLOW CO.66 PI Ex1 sensors are protected against explosion hazard by gases, vapors, and liquids according to the gas group IIB. The device protection level (EPL) is "Gb" for the use in Zone 1 according to ATEX/IECEx.

The Barrier Box ST Ex1 is used to limit the energy supplied to the SEMIFLOW flow sensors to avoid ignition according to IEC 60079-11 (ATEX/IECEx). The device provides all necessary power and data interfaces to the operators outside the Ex-Zone and allows the intrinsically safe SEMIFLOW to be used in hazardous areas with possible fire or explosion risks due to explosive gas atmospheres (Zone 1, Group IIB).

SEMIFLOW flow meters are successfully applied in different semiconductor processes

The sensors specialized for the use in hazardous areas of Zone 1 according to ATEX/IECEx are based on the successful SEMIFLOW series. With their robust industrial design, SEMIFLOW flow meters are specifically designed for highly accurate and contactless flow and volume measurement of abrasive, adherent, corrosive, and ultra-pure liquids as applied in single wafer cleaning, lithography and mixing equipment, chemical supply systems, and slurry lines. The compact sensors impress with their innovative clamp-on architecture to eliminate any risks of contamination and leakages. Hence, the flow meters can easily integrate into existing architectures without the hassle of system downtimes. SEMIFLOW sensors are available in eight different sensor sizes for a wide range of tube sizes. They are ideally suited for PFA, PTFE, and other hard plastic tubes and pipes.

With a non-contact handshake, the two managing directors Michael Münch and Thomas Riedel have sealed the partnership between SONOTEC GmbH from Halle (Saale) and S3 Alliance GmbH from Kirchentellinsfurt. The application specialist for process equipment, metrology, and handling is from now on taking over the Europe-wide sales and service for flow measurement technologies and air bubble detectors of SONOTEC in the semiconductor and micro-electronics industry.

SONOTEC holds a world leading position in ultrasonic-based technologies for liquid flow monitoring on flexible and rigid tube systems. Non-contact flow meters and bubble detectors can monitor and control liquid flow processes without any risk of leakage or contamination and without causing any downtime of machinery. Therefore, SONOTEC’s contactless measurement technology has proven ideal for sensitive semiconductor processes in which a number of abrasive, adhesive, corrosive, and high-purity liquids are applied.

S3 Alliance is a market driven organization with more than 20 years of experience in the field of distribution, service, and project management bringing manufacturers of highly specialized capital goods and consumables into Semiconductor, Green Energy, Life Sciences and related market segments.

“The cooperation brings together the strengths of two companies that are perfectly complementing each other. This opens up the opportunity to significantly yield market synergies for a successful operation in the European semiconductor industry”, emphasizes Michael Münch his expectations towards the agreement.

“We are very happy to collaborate with a German high-tech sensor company that is already successful in other industries. SONOTEC products fit perfectly into the S3 Alliance portfolio that has strengths in CMP and wet chemical processing applications. Using accurate contactless technology enables easy and safe integration, with the possibility to control more accurately demanding semiconductor applications, which is required by the market. We will support SONOTEC with access to an existing customer base in the industry and are looking forward to develop a strong and successful relationship for the future.”, describes Thomas Riedel the framework and cooperation goals
