microreactors, lab-on-a-chip, flow chemistry

As a leading manufacturer in the fields of microfluidics and microreaction technology, Little Things Factory develops and produces high-quality components and system solutions made of glass, quartz and glass-silicon compund materials. Typical applications in the fields of life science, chemistry and R&D are fluidic chips for lab-on-a-chip applications as well as microreactors required in the fields of diagnostics, medicine distribution, implantology or the fabrication of special chemicals. LTF has many years of expert knowledge in the design and application of optical, electronic and chemical functions within a wafer as the basis for microstructured processes. The company has thus become a partner for tech concerns, research institutions and universities alike.

  • The Nelson Mandela University launches a project to manufacture medicines against AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria

Elsoff. Little Things Factory GmbH (LTF) produces high quality components such as microreactors required in the fields of life sciences, medical distribution or the production of special chemicals. The outstanding technology from LTF is therefore perfectly suited for the development of vital medicines.

The Nelson Mandela University launches project for the production of AIDS drugs and other advanced pharmaceutical substances

The Nelson Mandela University in South Africa is currently implementing a project to manufacture vital drugs. The destination of the research team is to improve pharmaceutical production, so South Africa can produce its own substances for the medicines. These drugs will then be used primarily for diseases such as AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. Currently, original medicines are only being developed in Europe and the USA. China and India, however, produce much cheaper generics. These generics are imported from South Africa, whereby in spite of the cheaper prices billions of rand were spent. Making their own medicines ensures that people in South Africa have access to the latest pharmaceutical developments. In addition, local production can save the country a lot of money.

Flow reactors of LTF are used for drug research

For the development of drug manufacturing the team from the Nelson Mandela University uses flow reactors, which are manufactured by LTF in Germany. These reactors are part of the latest equipment from the National Research Foundation, which makes it possible to carry out the project at all. "Making their own medicines in South Africa is an important step forward and an asset to the locals. We are very proud to be part of this progress!" Alexander Schilling, Managing Director of LTF, reports.

For the first time a project of the Nelson Mandela University will be presented at a major convention

The Nelson Mandela University project is now being presented for the first time at BIO Africa Convention taking place from August 27-29 at ICC Durban in South Africa. For the successful further implementation of the project, an application has already been submitted for an unrestricted commercial facility for the manufacture of AIDS medicines.

Over the past decades, microreaction technology has become established as an important technological component particularly in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries as well as process engineering. In the production of fine chemicals as well as the intensification of chemical processes, microreaction technology is a recognized and efficient approach with increasing relevance. Through the use of microreactors, micro mixers and other micro process engineering components, a variety of reaction advantages in all kinds of processes can be achieved. Microreactors enables safe handling of hazardous reactions and help to minimize reagent. If a catalyst is integrated in the microreactor, it can have great impact for synthesis in continuous flow. Areas of application ranges from petrochemical to pharmaceutical.

    Catalyst in flow

As a leading manufacturer of microreactors and flow chemistry components Little Things Factory has developed flow microreactors with integrated catalyst. Therefore, microreactors of the MR LAB Series has been modified in different ways. One with the flow along an inserted catalyst rod and a cross flow version.

In a first aspect, the microreactor has a first reaction channel, a second reaction channel and a plurality of intermediate channels, which are arranged between the first reaction channel and the second reaction channel. The catalyst-containing channel is disposed between the plurality of intermediate channels. This version is called LTF-MS-Kat-G.

In a further aspect of the invention, the catalyst-containing channel comprises a catalyst rod made of a metal, an alloy or a glass. The metal may e.g. Copper, nickel or platinum. The catalyst rod is e.g. in the form of a metal wire. In a further aspect of the invention, the catalyst rod is coated. The catalyst rod can be pushed in and out of the channel. The catalyst-containing channel may also contain powders in another aspect. This version is called LTF-MS-Kat-R.

  • Little Things Factory supplies lab on chip components made of glass, quartz and glass-silicon composite materials. These components are used as micro reactors in the field of medical and pharmaceutical technology as well as in the form of fluidic chips in the field of diagnostics, medical applications and implantology.

As materials glass, quartz and glass-silicon combinations are ideal for these applications, since they are materials which can resist difficult environmental conditions such as, for example, high temperatures and chemicals. They nonetheless demonstrate a high degree of bio-compatibility. These characteristics distinguish the materials markedly from the polymer substances standardly used in these fields of application.

For the creation of fluidic components and bio-chips Little Things Factory uses a wide range of structuring processes which have been employed for many years in the field of MEMS cap wafers, including, for example, micro-sandblasting and wet-chemical structuring of glass and quartz. The manufacture of these fluidic chips can be carried out inexpensively based on 6" or 8" wafers.

  • Microreactors can be built by the Little Things Factory in sizes up to 300mm x 300mm. The height is dependent on the number of function levels and their thickness. The various functions are achieved modularly through design elements within a layer, as well as spanning the various layers.

    STANDARD REACTORS

The Little Things Factory GmbH develops and manufactures standard reactors for microreaction technology from glass. This material is suited for these applications, since it is also resistant to difficult environmental influences, such as, for example, high temperatures and chemicals, and at the same time displays a high degree of biocompatibility.

    CONNECTIONS

The fluid components of the Little Things Factory can be directly screwed onto each other or linked by means of connecting elements such as pipes or hoses. Sensors and valves are integrated into double muff couplings which have been specially designed to accommodate them.

    CUSTOMER-SPECIFIC REACTORS

Microreactors with a microstructured inner structure are assembled by the Little Things Factory with a free choice of design; they are application-specific in accordance with customer requirements and use glass, quartz, silicon and glass/silicon combinations.
