FocalSpec is introducing the two new Line Confocal sensors for high-speed inline inspection at SEMICON Europa. The new sensors, LCI1220 and LCI1620, offer an unbeatable combination of speed, precision and imaging capability.

FocalSpec’s unique Line Confocal Imaging (LCI) technology combines 3D topography, 3D tomography and 2D grayscale intensity imaging into one sensor. With the addition of 3D Line Confocal Scanner UULA, it is possible to use the same technology in smart manufacturing facilities as well as in R&D and metrology laboratories.

  • FocalSpec is a fast-growing high technology company from Finland with a global presence in China and USA.

    FocalSpec designs and manufactures sensors and systems which are based on a novel optical technology called Line Confocal Imaging that enables simultaneous imaging of 3D topography, 3D tomography, and 2D gray scale intensity.

  • Finnish technology company FocalSpec has been acquired by TKH Group NV, a Dutch listed technology company. FocalSpec will join the LMI Technologies group, owned by TKH and strengthen further its position in inline metrology.

  • FocalSpec’s new Line Confocal Sensors, the LCI1220 and LCI1620, offer an unbeatable combination of speed, precision and imaging capability, specifically suited to consumer electronic manufacturing.

    The LCI sensors ensure continuous, non-contact measurement of even the most challenging materials and shapes including curved, mirror-like, and transparent surfaces. The sensors are specifically designed for various applications in the consumer electronics industry but can be utilized in various manufacturing contexts.

    System integrators can develop unforeseen applications owing to the FocalSpec sensors’ unique ability to capture 3D topography, 3D tomography and 2D intensity data simultaneously with sampling speed of up to 27 kHz and measurement repeatability of 0.19-0.25 μm. Sensors can be easily integrated into new machine vision systems or existing manufacturing lines.

  • Line Confocal Scanner UULA is the only automated optical inspection system in the world that is capable of capturing three types of data in a single scan:

    • 3D topography and dimensions
    • Tomographic imaging of transparent objects
    • High-precision 2D imaging with an extended depth of field

    UULA provides high-speed, repeatable 2D/3D topography and tomography measurement results with sub-micron level accuracy on challenging surfaces and shapes, such as mirror-like, curved or multi-layered transparent materials.

    UULA allows for a wide variety of different measurements in several industrial processes such as thickness, step height, gap and offset, flatness, roughness, coplanarity and many more.

    UULA is a surface profiler equipped with a Line Confocal Sensor, an automated X-Y table, and a motorized Z- movement. The system has its own dedicated software called FocalSpec Map which allows users to have;

  • The need for roughness measurement


    Surface roughness is a measure of the texture of a surface. It is quantified by the vertical deviations of a real surface from its ideal form. If these deviations are large, the surface is rough; if they are small, the surface is smooth. Surface roughness also causes appearance differences which influence a product’s added value such as the grade and indirectly customer satisfaction. Manufacturers need a more quantitative, reliable, repeatable, non-destructive and non-contact methodology to understand the exact correlations between processing changes and surface roughness.


    FocalSpec's MP9000 - Online Roughness Measurement System provides a novel solution for this challenge.


    The MP9000 containing a Line Confocal Sensor is installed over an extruder’s film rolling unit. FocalSpec roughness measurement software is used for data collection and analysis. The MP9000 generates automated quality reports and statistics on the surface roughness characteristics of entire production batches. The quality reports can be sent to the customer before shipping the batch.


    Owing to the capabilities of the Line Confocal Sensor installed in the system, measurement works perfectly for any material including plastics, metal, flexible, soft, porous, fragile materials, and paper. It detects all surface types and materials, even glossy, mirror-like, and transparent multilayered surfaces.


    The MP9000 delivers ISO-standards based results of various roughness parameters such as Ra (0.5 μm -50 μm), Rz (5 μm - 100 μm), RSm (50 μm - 1000 μm), Rzjis82, RzJIS94, Rv, and process parameters such as Std, and Cpk with a repeatability of 30 nanometers or better.


    Measurements with MP9000 are not affected by the line vibrations due to fast surface profile capturing (t= 1-10 μs) even with the line speed of up to 150m/min.
    One of the main application areas of the MP9000 is online control of surface roughness in the production of PVB film for automotive windscreens and windows for buildings.

    MP900 can reliably measure surface roughness of coated or un-coated cables, medical tubes, pipes, wires, fibers, glass or metal tubes in different surface conditions, including dark, matte, glossy, and transparent....

  • The need for roughness measurement

    Cables, wire insulation, pipes, and tubes are manufactured by plastic extrusion in which raw plastic material is melted and formed into a continuous profile. However, even in industrial settings, plastics extrusion is subject to many destabilizing factors. Instabilities are due to, for example, extrusion barrel temperature fluctuations or improperly prepared resins.The most common problem in plastics extrusion is a phenomenon called melt fracture, often described as “sharkskin”. Melt fracture is caused by pulsations in melt pressure and skin rupture. Pressure pulsations occur when the polymer sticks and breaks loose from the metal surfaces in the die. Skin rupture, for its part, occurs when the surface of the plastic is stretched too quickly on leaving the die.


    Aluminum pipes are also manufactured by an extrusion process which may have defects and surface issues.


    Steel, and Inox pipes, and tubes are usually electric or laser welded. During the manufacturing process, surface finish is deteriorated and the texture changes.

    FocalSpec's MP900 - Inline Roughness Measurement System provides a novel solution for this challenge.


    MP900 uses Line Confocal Imaging (LCI) technology that can reliably measure surface roughness of coated or un-coated cables, medical tubes, pipes, wires, fibers, glass or metal tubes in different surface conditions, including dark, matte, glossy, and transparent.

    A large amount of surface roughness data produced by non-contact, optical, real-time measurement is also used to analyze the extrusion process without affecting manufacturing line speed of up to 150m/min. MP900 can be used as an efficient tool for the optimizing extrusion process with the outputs of Std and Cpk.
    The MP900 is a plug and play system which is suitable for products with a minimum diameter of 1 mm and with no limitation for the maximum diameter. The MP900 works up to a maximum of 1 mm surface vibration on the lines.


    The MP900 delivers around 30-nanometer level repeatability for high-quality ISO standards-based roughness measurements for Ra (up to 50 μm), Rz, and RSm parameters. MP900 system's software enables users to make, view and export measurements, as well as diagnose and calibrate the equipment. The measurement date and time is recorded from each individual measurement and can be exported.
