  • Watlow® Opens New Ceramic Technology Center In St. Louis to Develop Advanced Material Solutions for Thermal Management Systems

    11/15/2023

    Watlow
    St. Louis, MO

Watlow® has opened a new Ceramic Technology Center at its St. Louis headquarters today to develop new materials solutions that enhance the company’s advanced thermal management systems for customers in semiconductor, medical devices, life sciences, green energy and other critical industries.

Located inside Watlow’s Technology and Development Center, the new Ceramic Technology Center is a $6 million, 12,000 square foot conversion of available factory space that will create an initial 10-15 new high-tech jobs plus many more in the coming years, adding to the company’s 600+ employee base in St. Louis and 4300+ employees worldwide.

The Ceramic Technology Center will allow us to research and develop the technologies that our customers require, along with the data behind the technologies, so that we can scale and grow the business,” said Rob Gilmore, Watlow’s chief executive officer.  “The team working in this area will be responsible for ceramic research and development of materials and processes to support and enhance our most advanced thermal systems.”

Advanced ceramics provide a unique combination of material properties utilized in a wide range of demanding thermal management system applications.

We take great pride in our investment in research and development of advanced materials in the St. Louis area, which will pave the way for numerous high-tech job opportunities," said Dr. Ashish Bhatnagar, Watlow’s chief technology officer. "The Ceramic Technology Center stands as a cornerstone for our semiconductor and other business units' growth strategy. This facility will empower us to explore and innovate with cutting-edge materials, offering high-value solutions to our customers on a global scale.”

Watlow received support from several government programs to support its efforts to attract new jobs and build the infrastructure for its new Ceramic Technology Center. A grant of $740,000 from the Jordan Valley Innovation Center was used to help offset the cost of machinery and equipment. Additionally, Watlow will benefit from the Missouri Department of Economic Development’s Missouri Works program and Missouri One Start division. The Missouri Works program is a tool that helps companies expand and retain workers by providing access to capital through withholdings or tax credits for job creation. Missouri One Start, a division of the Department of Economic Development, assists eligible businesses with their recruitment and training needs.

  • Watlow Electric Manufacturing Company Expands to India

With the successful opening of its new facility in April, Watlow Electric Manufacturing Company, a provider in industrial heating solutions, temperature sensors, and temperature control systems, is showing its long-term commitment to India’s industrial growth and innovation.

The new location at Rathi Legacy-Rohan Tech Park, Bangalore, officially opened on April 3, 2025, and represents a significant investment in the region’s rapidly growing technology and manufacturing ecosystem. This expansion is a key milestone in Watlow Electric Manufacturing Company's broader South Asia strategy, complementing its existing presence in Chennai, which was established in 2021.

Strategic Location: Bangalore as a Hub for Innovation

Bangalore was selected for this new office due to its reputation as the “Silicon Valley of India,” a hub for tech talent, innovation, and research. The city’s vibrant environment, coupled with its rapidly growing tech ecosystem, aligns perfectly with Watlow Electric Manufacturing Company's long-term objectives of advancing technology and driving growth in India’s expanding semiconductor and industrial sectors.

Key Roles of the Bangalore Facility in Industrial Growth

The new Bangalore facility will serve as a crucial hub for Watlow Electric Manufacturing Company's operations in India, focusing on product development, customer support, and market research. This location is well-positioned to support India’s rapidly growing semiconductor industry by providing specialized thermal system engineering, heater prototyping, and verification testing capabilities. “By having a local presence in Bangalore, we can provide faster response times and more personalized service to our customers. Our ability to carry out engineering designs and prototyping locally will allow us to complete projects more efficiently, meeting the specific needs of the Indian market,” said Mr. Rob Gilmore, chief executive officer for Watlow Electric Manufacturing Company.

Commitment to Innovation and R&D in Thermal Solutions

The Bangalore site will also house a dedicated R&D (research and development) team and prototype labs, focusing on driving innovation in thermal management solutions, energy efficiency, and sustainability. The office will contribute to developing smart factory solutions for industries adopting Industry 4.0 technologies, which help improve processes, productivity, and uptime through advanced data management and process control systems.

Recruitment and Talent Development in Bangalore

Watlow Electric Manufacturing Company is committed to recruiting top-tier talent to support this expansion and is partnering with local universities, industry organizations, and talent development centers to attract skilled professionals across fields like engineering, R&D, design, and business development. To date, nearly 30 team members are already working at the Bangalore office, with plans for continued growth.

Focus on Sustainability and Energy Efficiency

Sustainability remains a core focus of Watlow Electric Manufacturing Company's global operations, and the Bangalore office will play a key role in advancing the company’s commitment to delivering eco-friendly thermal solutions. As India’s industrial sector increasingly embraces clean energy and sustainable manufacturing, Watlow Electric Manufacturing Company aims to provide products that support this transition while maintaining high energy efficiency standards. “Our products developed here in Bangalore will contribute to India’s shift toward more sustainable manufacturing processes. With the growing demand for energy-efficient solutions, we are confident that our expertise, combined with local knowledge, will enable us to deliver thermal solutions that meet the unique needs of the Indian market,” Mr. Jake Lindley, global engineering department manager, explained.

Advancing Sustainable Solutions for India’s Industries
