  • The Allied Vision Alvium Camera Series is an innovative camera platform that addresses the limitations associated with current camera and sensor modules for embedded applications, and offers system designers a previously unknown level of freedom. Powered by the revolutionary ALVIUM Technology, a unique System-on-chip designed by Allied Vision, the Alvium 1500 and Alvium 1800 Series deliver industrial performance to embedded vision with 6 key benefits for system engineers:

    • Broad range of state-of-the-art sensors
    • On-board image processing
    • Easy hardware and software integration
    • Single board, industrial-grade design
    • Intelligent power management
    • Cost optimized design

    Broad range of state-of-the-art sensors
The ALVIUM System on Chip (SoC) includes a sensor interface designed to support all current and future sensors from leading sensor vendors such as ON Semiconductors and Sony with resolutions ranging from VGA (0.3 Megapixel) to 21 Megapixel. The first release will include four sensors from 0.5 to 5 Megapixel available in the Alvium 1500 and Alvium 1800 Series. We will continuously add new sensors to expand the Alvium range in the following months and years. Download the flyer for more details about available sensors.

    On-board image processing
All Alvium cameras build on Allied Vision's unique ALVIUM® Technology that includes an Image Signal Processor (ISP) coupled with a powerful Image Processing Library (IPL). This allows system engineers to perform image corrections and preprocessing tasks onboard the camera instead of the host system or embedded board. By doing so, they can free up CPU capacity on their host processor for their image processing algorithms or downsize their host to reduce overall system costs.

    Easy hardware and software integration
The Alvium camera modules are available as bare board, open housing and closed housing with various lens mount options for easy hardware integration. Unlike conventional low-cost sensor modules, the Alvium camera series offers a full range of models covering different image sensors and interfaces. Thanks to its platform concept and integrated sensor interface, the Alvium series shares one CSI-2 driver for all models, regardless of the sensor or feature set. This makes it extremely easy to swap cameras or upgrade a system to another sensor. Allied Vision provides drivers for popular embedded boards with the i.MX series SoCs from NXP and the TX Series from NVIDIA, including the latest NVIDIA Xavier. Find the list of the supported embedded processors in the Alvium flyer.

    Single-board, industrial-grade design
The Alvium camera platform relies on an ultra-compact single board design with all electronic components fitted on both sides of one 27 x 27 mm board, which is available as a bare board module. Not only does this ensure a small size and light weight, it is also the most robust solution for applications subjects to shocks and vibrations. Housed versions are also available fulfilling the highest standards for sensor alignment for optimal image quality.

    Intelligent power management
The ALVIUM® Technology hardware is a proprietary ASIC chip (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit). Unlike FPGAs commonly used in machine vision cameras, the ALVIUM® ASIC has a much higher integration density which makes it very power efficient. It further integrates an intelligent power management where only the used functionality draws power and the rest is shut-off.

    Cost-optimized design
The Alvium camera series have been designed to offer unprecedented value for money and allow embedded system engineers to reduce their development and system costs. The unique ALVIUM® technology makes advanced image processing accessible in affordable camera modules. Easy hardware and software integration reduces development time radically and offloading image correction to the camera's ISP enables system integrator to downsize their host processor and reduce overall system costs.

    Alvium 1500 and Alvium 1800

The first camera series based on the Alvium platform are the Alvium 1500 and Alvium 1800 Series. Both will be available with a selection of image sensors that will be continuously expanded over time. They offer different feature sets and hardware and software interfaces to address individual user profiles.

  • The new Mako G-508 POL polarizer camera is equipped with a PolarsensTM 5.0 MP IMX250MZR/MYR CMOS sensor (monochrome or color) that incorporates the latest four-directional polarization filter technology from Sony. The on-chip nanowire polarizing layer supports four orientations (0°, 45°, 90°, and 135°) so that each pixel of the sensor captures polarized light in relation to its specific wire-grid axis. Four pixels together build a calculation unit to determine for each pixel the intensity and angle of polarization, similar to the debayering of an RGB or color sensor. By using pseudo-color look-up tables for each angle of polarization defects and
areas of stress can be easily visualized.

Improving visibility with polarization image data
With the new polarizer camera Allied Vision offers a new cost-effective tool to unveil image features not visible with conventional imaging solutions. By using polarized image data, reflections that hinder to surface inspection can be reduced, contrast can be enhanced in lowlight conditions to detect shapes, and various material properties can be detected, like stress, composition, or surface structure.
