Ohara also offers 18 types of Optical Glass for Molded Aspherical Lenses(Low Tg Optical Glass) for use in molded lenses. The glass type designation for these types begins with L-. They are also environmentally friendly, as they do not contain lead or arsenic.

    Non-browning Glass

A special optical glass that reduces coloring in a radiation environment. It is used for optical components in radiation environments such as outer space.

A standard optical glass be colored under radiation environment and light cannot pass it through. When the camera lens colored, the correct image cannot be obtained and the function as a camera will be lost.

Reduce coloring by irradiation: Even if it is placed in a strong radiation environment where general optical glass is colored, its transmittance almost no changes before and after irradiation due to its special composition.

Larger diameter : Some Non-browning Glass are possible to yield 150mm diameter or larger by manufacturing technology that Ohara has cultivated for many years. Please consult us for details.

Available in small lot orders : We can handle orders for several pieces per lot as we have been doing to general optical glass. Since it can be processed in the same way as general optical glass, it can be hot pressed, ground and polished.

  • NANOCERAM™ Shock resistant clear glass-ceramics
NANOCERAMTM is glass-ceramic achieved superior mechanical properties and high transmittance.
New proposals will be possible that cannot be realized with sapphire crystal glass and chemically strengthened glass...

  • Glass-ceramic which we have furt h e r improved OHARA’s nanocrystallization technology, achieving both superior shock resistance and high transmittance. This product is used in covers for automotive sensors and cover glass for smartphones where high strength is required.

“NANOCERAM™” has been selected for use in the “KITSUNE” microsatellite. This microsatellite is manufactured by a consortium (the “HAK Consortium”) consisting of Harada Seiki Kogyo Inc. (Hamamatsu-shi, Shizuoka), Addnics Corp. (Hachioji-shi, Tokyo), and Kyushu Institute of Technology (Kitakyushu-shi, Fukuoka).

Impact Resistance High Hardness : Compared with general borosilicate glass, NANOCERAM™ has 30% higher hardness and showed more than 10 times higher impact resistance in steel ball drop impact test. In addition, it has a 20% higher hardness than chemically strengthened glass, and showed more than 3 times higher impact resistance in steel ball drop impact test. Also, it has better fracture toughness than sapphire crystal glass, and cracks that cause breakage do not occur even if there are scratches and realizing a characteristic that is resistant to cracking.

Good Processability : Although it has the properties of hard ceramics, the cutting, polishing and moldability realized workability comparable to that of glass. Moreover, it has grinding and polishing property which can shorten process time to about 1 / 20th of sapphire crystal glass.

High Transmittance : Since, crystal grains of glass ceramics are large, so it is difficult to transmit light and never used for optical applications. However, high transparency has been realized by Ohara's nanocrystallization technology (particle diameter about 6 nm) which has a high track record in the space and astronomy fields. NANOCERAM™ is mounted on a high-end lens protector for single-lens reflex interchangeable lenses of domestic manufacturers who are demanding strict optical performance and precise quality, and NANOCERAM™ has received high marks.

  • i-Line High Homogeneity Glass
Optical glass with excellent internal transmittance and optical homogeneity. This product is used for lenses for semiconductor exposure equipment and high-precision inspection devices where homogeneity of the refractive index is crucial....

  • These materials are optically homogeneous and have excellent internal transmittance and high durability against solarization (coloring by UV). They are used in semi-conductor production equipment (Stepper Cameras) and its peripherals (Illumination Systems, etc.).

Internal transmittance of the glass is indicated as guaranteed minimum transmittance at 365nm (10 and 25 mm sample thickness). Please note this is internal transmittance, reflection losses are not included.

The degree of solarization is indicated as a decrease in transmittance caused by radiation from a super high pressure mercury-vapor lamp. The detailed measurement method is described in the "Japanese Optical Glass Industrial Standard (JOGIS)".

Optical Homogeneity (Δn) is guaranteed by use of our He-Ne laser interferometers. The Δn specification is indicated for three diameter ranges (Φ 160 mm or less, Φ 210 mm or less, Φ 260 mm or less) due to the Δn variances caused by glass type, size, and shape. Please note, if the ordered thickness is less than 25 mm, we will use a 25 mm thick test piece for Δn measurement. Please contact us when lower Δn specifications are required.

Refractive Index (ni) Variation within one Lot (Sn Standard): The indicated Sn value is the refractive index variation after annealing within a single batch (same melt, same annealing run). Example: ±1 (×10⁻⁵)

The standard refractive index (ni) of our i-line glasses is higher than our catalogue nominal values. This is due to the longer annealing times which are necessary to obtain the desired homogeneity levels. Longer annealing times result in higher refractive indices. Example: +20±20
