  • The Vision hardware portfolio receives the Red Dot Award and the iF Design Award Gold

    Beckhoff Vision now includes a complete hardware portfolio in addition to the TwinCAT Vision software solution that was introduced in 2017. From the very beginning, its development was oriented around an optimal design and concepts for industrial use. The expert jury for the renowned Red Dot Award recently confirmed that these goals have been successfully achieved as they honored Beckhoff with an award in the automation category. This prize is only awarded to products that have an excellent design. This was further confirmed with the iF Design Award Gold, the highest distinction in this competition.

    The Beckhoff portfolio of Vision hardware includes area scan cameras, C-mount lenses, multi-color LED illumination, and complete vision units that meet industrial requirements perfectly, both as individual components and as an entire machine vision system. The Adrian und Greiser design agency has developed a consistent design concept for Beckhoff that gives this product range a look and feel that marries sophisticated optics and electronics with industrial robustness. Relevant design aspects include the IP65/IP67 anodized aluminum and tempered anti-reflective glass housing, smooth glass surfaces that provide high resistance to cleaning agents and other chemicals, various options for flexible mounting and application, and optional shatter protection. For example, the lenses have a sleek and streamlined look, and are very easy to mount, with reliable, lockable adjustment options.

    This product design, which is perfectly suited to its application, also won over the Red Dot jury, consisting of around 50 international product design experts. Every year, this award honors industrially manufactured products which are outstanding in terms of their design quality: the products must be aesthetically pleasing, functional, smart, or innovative. Beckhoff Vision prevailed, winning the "Red Dot Winner 2023" label.

    The following statement was made regarding the iF Design Award 2023 Gold: "The strong but sensitive type: Beckhoff vision system combines the precision of a laboratory instrument with the robustness of an industrial machine. These products are all about control, and this is reflected in the solidly attractive design language.”

  • Fast and efficient through AI-supported engineering

    With TwinCAT Chat, large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT from OpenAI can conveniently be used in the TwinCAT XAE engineering environment to develop projects. Efficiency potential can thus be exploited, from control programming to corporate management.

    Large language models offer a number of benefits for both automation engineers and enterprise management. For automation engineers, LLMs have the potential to revolutionize the development process by automatically generating and completing code. This speeds up the entire process. In addition, you can even have LLMs create personal tutorials and specifically ask for solutions to problems that arise. From an enterprise management perspective, LLMs promote knowledge transfer within the organization. They can act as a central knowledge base, storing valuable information and making it available when needed. In addition, LLMs can relieve the pressure on the support team by serving as the first point of contact for customer inquiries.

    TwinCAT Chat was developed to deeply integrate LLMs into control engineering, giving users a clear benefit when compared to using ChatGPT traditionally in a web browser, for example. This greatly simplifies the development process, as communication and code exchange are seamlessly integrated. Furthermore, the basic initialization of the LLM has been tailored specifically to TwinCAT requests. You can thus ask specific questions directly and don’t have to tell the LLM that you are using TwinCAT first and that the code examples are expected in Structured Text. In addition, the generated code can easily be transferred, which not only saves developers time but also prevents the errors that occur when transferring code manually. For efficient interaction with TwinCAT Chat, simple one-click pre-tested requests can be used that are specifically designed to improve the user's workflow. Other current development work includes automated creation of TwinCAT HMI controls and a chatbot interface to the extensive Beckhoff documentation system.

  • With XTS linear transport system, Beckhoff offers a proven drive solution in which magnetically driven movers move along a travel path of fully integrated motor modules.

    The No Cable Technology (NCT) extension of the XTS system is the basis for a new leap in terms of machine flexibility. 
    For the first time, a power supply and synchronous real-time data communication are available on the moving XTS movers, with which individual XTS movers can be expanded into mobile handling and processing stations. In addition to the previous pure product transport, NCT enables additional process sequences directly on the mover itself.

    With NCT, processing steps and quality control are possible for the first time directly on the mover during the running process. Sufficient power and fast communication with the TwinCAT control system make the connection of sensors and actuators easy. Data communication with each mover is real-time capable and, in conjunction with EtherCAT, synchronizes system-wide events with µs precision so that a specific event can be triggered at an exact position. Especially in the areas of product handling, processing and measuring parallel to transport as well as machine adaptations for quickly changing production batches, NCT offers users new solution possibilities.

  • The extensive Beckhoff I/O portfolio includes products for all areas of use and environmental conditions. The classic KLxxxx and ELxxxx Bus and EtherCAT Terminals in IP20 protection offer a wide variety of fieldbus protocols and signal types. The terminals are plugged into one another and are primarily used in terminal boxes or in the control cabinet, where they are protected against external influences. Their low housing width in combination with a high channel density make them a space-saving solution in the control cabinet.

    The EtherCAT product range is extended still further in the IP20 area by the EJxxx EtherCAT plug-in modules, which are mainly suitable for the series production of machines and plants. Based on the EtherCAT I/O system, the design of the EJ modules allows them to be plugged directly into a PCB. This is called a signal distribution board and distributes the supply of power and the signals to the application-specific connection technology. Dispensing with the classic individual wiring considerably reduces the installation time in series machine production.

    The Fieldbus, IO-Link, and EtherCAT Box modules in IP67 protection allow use in harsh environmental conditions. With their compact and watertight design, they are suitable for direct installation in the machine.
