Seminar “Overview of Semiconductor Manufacturing” – Progressing Towards Self-Reliance in Vietnam’s Semiconductor Industry
On the afternoon of November 7th, at the BK Smart Tech Office – Hanoi University of Science and Technology, part of the National Innovation Center (NIC) in Hoa Lac High-Tech Park, Hanoi, the seminar "Overview of Semiconductor Manufacturing" was successfully held. The event attracted a large gathering of industry experts, representatives from domestic and international electronics and semiconductor manufacturing companies. Organized by INTECH Group in collaboration with NIC, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, and DNN Semiconductor Technology Company from Taiwan, the seminar aimed to enhance local semiconductor production capabilities, advancing Vietnam's journey towards self-reliance and positioning it as a key player in the global semiconductor supply chain.
In his opening speech, Mr. Vo Xuan Hoai, Deputy Director of the National Innovation Center (NIC), emphasized: “Today’s event is a testament to the government’s commitment to positioning Vietnam as a prominent hub in the global semiconductor supply chain. On August 5, 2024, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 791/QD-TTg to establish the National Steering Committee for the Development of the Semiconductor Industry, with the mission of integrating Vietnam more deeply into the international supply chain. NIC plays a pivotal role in implementing key programs, developing a skilled workforce, and fostering an innovative ecosystem within the semiconductor sector. NIC also serves as a bridge, facilitating partnerships for companies to collaborate in technology research and development. We encourage companies like INTECH Group and DNN to actively work with NIC to propel Vietnam’s semiconductor industry to greater heights.”
The seminar coincided with the Vietnam Semiconductor Industry Exhibition 2024 – SEMIExpo Vietnam 2024, which attracted the participation of leading global semiconductor corporations such as Global Foundries, Amkor, AMD, Lam Research, Intel, and Qorvo. SEMIExpo provided a conducive environment for domestic businesses to connect with international investors, thereby strengthening Vietnam’s position in the global supply chain and opening avenues for sustainable cooperation.
In the area of workforce development, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Pham Duy Linh, Deputy Head of Science and Technology at Hanoi University of Science and Technology, emphasized the importance of cultivating a highly skilled workforce for the semiconductor industry. He stated: “Training a highly technical workforce is a core mission for us to meet the rigorous demands of semiconductor manufacturing. Hanoi University of Science and Technology is committed to delivering high-quality training programs, offering internship opportunities with companies to equip students with the knowledge and skills that meet international standards. This commitment builds a strong talent pool capable of meeting the needs of both the Vietnamese and global semiconductor industry.”
At the seminar, Mr. Nguyen Minh Hai, Deputy General Director of INTECH Group, shared insights on establishing semiconductor manufacturing plants and auxiliary systems. He emphasized: “In the semiconductor manufacturing industry, constructing factories, setting up work environments, and auxiliary systems are essential foundations, as crucial as production lines and operational technology. With our proven expertise in designing and successfully building cleanroom systems up to Class 1—the highest global standard certified by NEBB (USA)—and our experience in implementing over 300 projects supporting FDI enterprises in the electronics sector, along with projects designing and constructing semiconductor manufacturing facilities in collaboration with international partners, we are confident that Vietnam has the capacity to independently build infrastructure and facilities for high-tech industries.”
From the perspective of establishing production lines, Mr. Howard Lin, a semiconductor manufacturing consultant from Taiwan’s DNN Technology, shared insights on advanced chip packaging technology (Advanced Packaging) and the steps to set up a chip packaging production line. He stated: “Building a chip packaging line is a strategic steppingstone for developing a domestic semiconductor industry and enhancing Vietnam’s global competitiveness. At DNN, we are committed to partnering with Vietnamese stakeholders to implement advanced chip packaging technology that meets international standards, optimizes production efficiency, and ensures the highest quality of finished products.”
Alongside in-depth presentations, the seminar also organized networking activities, allowing attendees to expand their professional networks, exchange experiences, and explore strategic collaboration opportunities. These networking activities have strengthened the foundation for robust cooperation, supporting the goal of positioning Vietnam as a key semiconductor manufacturing hub in the Asia region.
The “Overview of Semiconductor Manufacturing” seminar was organized with the synergy and collaboration of three key entities: Academia, Industry, and Government. This partnership represents a vital step toward enhancing Vietnam’s domestic production capabilities in the semiconductor sector to meet the increasing demands of the global supply chain. The event also offered a valuable opportunity for both domestic and international experts and enterprises to share knowledge, build long-term partnerships, and lay a sustainable foundation for the semiconductor industry in Vietnam.
