    The new whitepaper highlights the specific benefits of bentonite clay in terms of composition, moisture-adsorption performance, production requirements, and the environmental impact of available moisture controlled packaging solutions. Bentonite clay, the principal ingredient in Clariant Desi Pak® desiccants, is a highly adsorbent, chemically inert material comprised of calcium montmorillonite. It is an abundant, naturally occurring substance that can be mined and produced in many areas of the world. It requires no chemical additives and, once mined, requires only limited processing (extrusion, drying, grading) prior to use. Thus, the material stands out from synthetic desiccants whose production requires significant chemical, energy, and resource inputs, and necessitate global distribution that adds to the material's overall carbon footprint.

    The paper provides performance data, including adsorption characteristics according to MIL-D-3464 and DIN 55473, for desiccants in the most common packaging applications.     Charlotte, May 23, 2018 – Clariant, a world leader in specialty chemicals, and its Cargo & Device Protection unit, the originator of the color change humidity indicator card, introduce an industry-first innovation to better ensure that the integrity of dry packing that protects moisture-sensitive devices has not been compromised by high humidity at any time during shipment or storage. The new Humitector Type 2 Non-Reversible Humidity Indicator Cards are low-halogen and free of cobalt dichloride, a substance of concern to the European Chemical Bureau.

    The new Humitector cards are the only low-halogen cobalt dichloride-free humidity indicator cards to combine multiple, reversible color humidity indicators with an industry first: a patent-pending, non-reversible 60% humidity indicator. They provide verifiable color change accuracy and meet or exceed applicable European Chemical Bureau regulations. The new cards have been approved for use by the Joint Electron Device Engineering Council (JEDEC) in the latest revisions to IPC/JEDEC J-STD-033 (J-STD-033D) – the dry packing standard for surface mount devices.

    Until now, users of moisture-sensitive, reflowable surface mount devices have had little choice in the humidity indicator cards required for use in protective packages governed by the J-STD-033 standard. Typical cards offer only reversible indicators that reflect current (dry or humid) conditions. If package contents, including the card, are exposed to damaging humidity but then returned to a dry environment before the card is checked, the exposure could go unnoticed as the card reverses back to a dry reading. As a result, surface mounts could enter production even though they may have been compromised by moisture.

    Shanghai, August 21, 2018 – Clariant, a world leader in specialty chemicals, delivers a new level of moisture-exposure assurance to surface mount suppliers and device manufacturers in the Far East, with the regional debut of the first Type 2 non-reversible humidity indicator card for dry packing – Humitector Type 2 – at Semicon Taiwan (Booth I-2823).

    Clariant's new Humitector Type 2 Non-Reversible Humidity Indicator Cards contain a patent-pending non-reversible 60% humidity spot indicator which enables them to indicate whether dry packed surface mount devices (SMDs) have been exposed to high levels of moisture at any point during shipment or storage. This unique innovation offers a major step forward in preventing moisture-compromised surface mounts from entering production.

    Until now, users of moisture sensitive, reflowable surface mount devices have had little choice in the humidity indicator cards required for use in protective packages governed by the J-STD-033 standard. Typical Type 1 cards offer only reversible indicators that reflect current (dry or humid) conditions at the precise time of checking.

    The new Humitector Type 2 Non-Reversible Humidity Indicator cards provide verifiable color change accuracy and meet or exceed applicable European Chemical Bureau regulations. They have been approved for use by the Joint Electron Device Engineering Council (JEDEC) in the latest revisions to IPC/JEDEC J-STD-033 (J-STD-033D).

    According to section 3.3.2.3 of J-STD-033D (April 2018), humidity indicator cards cannot be re-used in dry packing if the 60% spot indicates it has surpassed the threshold. The Humitector Type 2 non-reversible 60% indicator will show clearly if this threshold has been exceeded as the permanent colored spot will have migrated beyond its black circle.

  • The Humitector™ Type 2 humidity indicator (HI) card from Clariant offers electronic and semiconductor manufacturers a JEDEC-compliant, non-reversible, humidity-indication solution that is low-halogen, and free of cobalt dichloride (CDF), a chemical regulated under European Chemical Bureau (ECB) REACH directives. Each card contains three color humidity indicators: a non-reversible 60% relative humidity (RH) indicator plus two reversible RH indicators (5% and 10%). These indicators provide verifiable color-change accuracy as required by IPC/JEDEC standard J-STD-033D and meet or exceed applicable ECB regulations.

    Thanks to its non-reversible indicator, this HI card provides a more complete history of the dry pack environment. Conventional HI cards, with only reversible indicators, reflect only current (dry or humid) conditions. If products are exposed to damaging humidity for a prolonged period but are returned to a dry environment before the card is checked, such damage could go undetected. 

    Further, per section 3.3.2.3 of J-STD-033D (April 2018), HI cards cannot be re-used in dry packing if the 60% spot indicates it has surpassed the threshold.
