    • New features added in order to improve accuracy and usability
    • SK hynix expands adoption of Gauss Labs’s solution to etching process in addition to thin film deposition process
    • Gauss Labs plans to expand its presence in global industrial AI market with strong references in semiconductor manufacturing

Seoul, August 13, 2024 – Gauss Labs announced today that it released the second version of its AI-based virtual metrology* solution, Panoptes VM 2.0.

    • Metrology: a process of measuring the physical and electrical characteristics to ensure that requirements are met in the manufacturing process

Panoptes VM provides all-wafer measurement data in real-time by predicting process outcomes from sensor data. By applying this solution, it is possible to predict the process results of all products without physical full-scale measurement, significantly reducing time and resources.

Gauss Labs said that Panoptes VM 2.0 is making a new leap forward with new modeling features including the Multi-Step Modeling, Operation-Group Modeling and Automatic Model Selection. With these new features, the prediction accuracy and usability have been greatly improved, compared to the previous version.

Gauss Labs, an industrial AI company invested by SK hynix, first launched Panoptes VM 1.0 in November 2022. The system has been deployed to the thin film deposition* process at SK hynix’s high-volume manufacturing fabs since December 2022. By integrating the virtual measurement results from Panoptes VM with APC*, SK hynix improved process variability* by approximately 29% and also enhanced yield rate.

    • Thin film deposition: the process of creating and depositing thin film coatings onto a substrate material
    • APC(Advanced Process Control): a solution that adjusts process condition for equipment adaptively during a manufacturing process
    • Variability: the scale of the quality variation of the products from a certain process. It is important to maintain a low process variability in order to keep the product quality consistent.

SK hynix plans to expand the application to APC use case. With the new Multi-Step Modeling feature, it expects to cover the etching process effectively. This new feature creates prediction models using data from not only the current step but also previous steps to improve the accuracy of VM predictions which is especially critical for etching process.

    • Etching: the process of removing unnecessary parts on the exterior of the circuit engraved on the wafer through photolithography

Panoptes VM 2.0 also provides the Operation-Group Modeling that allows the users to group data from similar operations for more effective modeling even when the data is scarce and the Automatic Model Selection, which supports multi-algorithm architecture and automatically selects the best performing model based on data characteristics to further improve the accuracy of VM as well as usability.

    New Highlights

    • Two joint academic papers on AI-based metrology technology presented
    • Gauss Labs’s innovative technology improves process control and equipment productivity in semiconductor manufacturing
    • Gauss Labs is at the forefront, leading industrial AI efforts to transform the manufacturing industry

    Seoul, February 29, 2024

SK hynix Inc. (or “the company”, www.skhynix.com) and Gauss Labs announced today that they participated in the SPIE AL* 2024, an international conference held in San Jose, California, and presented two papers based on the latest technology for AI-based metrology*.

    • SPIE Advanced Lithography + Patterning (SPIE AL): A conference hosted by the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE), the most prestigious international society in optics and photonics following foundation in 1955, where overall lithography technology for drawing semiconductor circuits are discussed
    • Metrology: Measuring the physical and electrical characteristics to ensure that requirements are met in the manufacturing process

SK hynix has been collaborating closely with Gauss Labs in various areas to increase semiconductor yield and productivity, and the results of this collaboration are published in these two papers.

In the paper “Model Aggregation for Virtual Metrology for High-Volume Manufacturing,” Gauss Labs introduces “aggregated AOM*“, an algorithm that increases the prediction accuracy of its AI-based virtual metrology solution, Panoptes VM (Virtual Metrology).

    • Adaptive Online Model (AOM): Modelling algorithms that address data changes due to process state changes and maintain high predictability

Since its adoption in December 2022, SK hynix used Panoptes VM to conduct virtual measurements on more than 50 million wafers so far, which translates to more than one wafer per second. The company was able to improve process variability* by 29% thanks to this technology.

    • Variability: The scale of the quality variation of the products from a certain process. It is important to maintain a low process variability in order to keep the product quality consistent.

The latest algorithm by Gauss Labs, the aggregated AOM, pools processing machines, chambers, etc. that share the same pattern and models them together. According to Gauss Labs, this solves the challenge of data shortage while further increasing the prediction accuracy.

In its second paper, “Universal Denoiser to Improve Metrology Throughput,” Gauss Labs introduces a “universal denoiser”, which removes random variations (noise) from CD-SEM* images. Measurements from CD-SEM images are taken at nanometer scale, so it is extremely important to remove noise in order to take measurements accurately.

    • Critical Dimension Scanning Electron Microscope (CD-SEM): Equipment that combines electronic and infrared optical microscopes to measure the size, shape, and position of semiconductor patterns

Gauss Labs’s universal denoiser uses AI to remove noise from various types of images at once. Through a series of extensive tests with SK hynix, Gauss Labs observed image acquisition time reduced to as much as ¼, compared to conventional technology. Gauss Labs states that this technology is expected to improve the productivity of metrology equipment by 42%.

Mike Kim, CEO of Gauss Labs, said that his company is working on research and development for applications of industrial AI in real-world semiconductor manufacturing fabs. “We will continue to launch innovative AI-based solutions to revolutionize manufacturing.”

  • Panoptes VM is the industry’s first virtual metrology solution deployed in high-volume manufacturing fabs for real-time run-to-run control. Panoptes VM achieves the holy grail of machine learning algorithms — reliability, robustness, and scalability based on deep domain knowledge — while oblivious to the underlying customer data. It is highly accurate and reliable even under low sampling rates of very high-dimensional sensor data. It is robust against data drifts and shifts via time-aware normalization and adaptive online learning. It is scalable for many process and equipment types with an easy-to-use interface for process engineers.
  • Panoptes IM
Let AI redefine your image metrology pipeline!...

  • Panoptes IM is an integrated image metrology solution that overcomes the physical and software limits of conventional measurement tools through state-of-the-art computer vision technology. To overcome the limit on metrology resources, Panoptes IM enhances higher-throughput, lower-quality images by advanced denoising techniques. This enables faster acquisition without any loss in the image quality. In addition to automatically measuring all conventional measurands in a given image, Panoptes IM also detects anomalies within the image and identifies their causes, which serves as another indicator for yield changes. In order to handle diverse metrology recipes, Panoptes IM provides a unified set of recipes, or methods and procedures for measuring features in images. These recipes are created, tested, deployed, and managed in an engineering platform, which is integrated seamlessly with existing manufacturing systems.
