  Press Releases

  • The Baumer toolbox for precise edge measurement now has high-performing new additions. With product innovations OE60 and OE40, sensor expert Baumer again sets new standards, this time in the field of automated edge measurement. Best example: OE60. The sensor enables edge measurements with 1 µm repeat accuracy at a distance of up to 100 mm. This way it is the most precise edge sensor in its class. Together with easy-to-integrate edge sensor OE40 and the smart 2D profile sensors of the OX series, the expanding Baumer portfolio provides solutions for numerous applications. A typical cross-industry application for edge sensors is web edge control. More applications are positioning as well as detecting gaps and diameters.

The right solution for any installation condition

Every application has own special requirements. Hence, the new Baumer toolbox for precise edge measurement offers tailored solutions matching different precision levels and installation conditions:

    •    The 2D profile sensors from the OX series detect edges by the incident light principle
    •    OE40 in compact housing with reflector bracket as plug-and-play option for measurements utilizing the through-beam principle
    •    OE60 operating on the transmitter and receiver principle allows for up to 300 mm distance between the sensor heads.

The high-precision OE60 edge sensors are the only ones in their class that can be deployed as stand-alone devices without controller unit, since the sensor heads directly integrate into the control via the standardized Modbus RTU protocol. This saves an additional device while reducing overall costs.

Ideal for battery cell production and the packaging industry

The new Baumer edge sensors are ideal in battery cell production. Here, web edge measurements must be extremely precise, as the individual layer positioning (anode, cathode and separator foil) in the winding process defines service life, capacity and even battery safety. The extremely precise edge measurement ensured by the Baumer OE40 and OE60 edge sensors is a significant contribution towards enhanced product quality. Reliable detection of the individual tracks even at high speed is key in battery production. OE60 succeeds in this point by the very short response time and the outstanding precision of 1 µm achieved without any filtering. This way the sensor will detect any position change in the web edge without time delay.

Quickly ready-to-use OE40 plays to its strengths in the packaging industry. The edge sensor with reflector bracket reliably and precisely measures edge positions on thin transparent films where optical sensors would reach their limits. This is achieved by the specialized measuring mode for transparent objects for ensured process stability, i.e. in material infeed of transparent films used as packaging seal.

    Performant portfolio for edge measurement

New edge sensors OE60 and OE40 as well as the smart 2D profile sensors of the OX series are new additons to the high-performance Baumer portfolio for reliable edge measurement at different precision levels and space conditions and cover multi-faceted requirements.

  • Sensor expert Baumer has further extended their Smart Vision portfolio with a high-performance code and text reader. Compact IDC230 characterizes by the same ease of use and commissioning the recently launched IDC200 multicode reader is already known for.

    Eased integration and commissioning

Further to easy installation of the handy device, a particular benefit is time-saving commissioning via web interface. Unlike most conventional code and text readers, IDC230 setup does not require any specialized software. Time-consuming installation releases by the internal IT department belong to the past. Combined with smart installation accessories, the sophisticated user menu ensures quick and hazzle-free commissioning. Using the USB-C port, the multicode reader can be easily connected to a computer and put into operation via web interface. Thanks to Auto-setup, just one click will suffice for reading several different codes. The space-saving housing, matching accessories, Ethernet and USB-C interfaces as well as Profinet, Ethernet/IP and DIO protocols ensure easy integration. Thanks to the freely configurable data telegrams, the code readers of the IDC family (IDC230, IDC200) easily integrate into existing systems and can be adapted to individual data formats.

High-performant and fast code and text reader

IDC230 is based on the same innovative technology platform as the IDC200 Multicode Reader and is capable of reading multiple lines of text and 1D/2D codes in parallel at high speed. IDC230 can process up to 40 frames per second, even of different code types. The bright integrated lighting will solve even challenging applications without the need for external illumination and this way saving additional costs and effort.

With new IDC230 from the multicode reader series, Baumer provides the right solution for applications in industrial automation that require simultaneous text reading, for example in the form of label inspection. Reflective surfaces, changing light conditions or module sizes at minimum resolution limit are no problem at all for the IDC230.

Applications ranging from warehouse logistics to electronics production

IDC230 is suitable for multifaceted applications in varied industries. For example, the code reader can be deployed for quality control in assembly, for track and trace in intralogistics and for various tasks in the industries of packaging, electronics and food.

The IDC230 is available as of June 2024.

  • Efficient quality control with the Baumer OX series

Camera or multi-sensor solutions are often deployed for quality control. Good to know: Smart 2D profile sensors may be a particularly efficient alternative.

For example, camera systems deployed for inline quality checks are the solution preferred by automation engineers. Less known, but just as efficient in inspection tasks are smart 2D profile sensors. This technical report presents applications with profile sensors as time and cost-saving solutions.

Whether smart 2D profile sensors are suitable for inspection tasks depends on a single criterion: the object to be inspected must provide a related feature detectable via height profile. If so, and maybe any distance information being of relevance as well, profile sensors like the Baumer OX series are a good, maybe even the better and more economical alternative to camera systems. For example edges, gaps, cable or pipe diameters and positions, or even arbitrary shapes that can be utilized for quality inspection. Typical application examples are checks of presence, completeness, shape or dimensional accuracy.

Profile sensors to speed up processes

The use of a smart 2D profile sensor for quality inspections provides two main benefits:

    1. High object speed, accelerated cycle times: Cycle times play a decisive role in productivity. This is where the OX sensors help speed up processes significantly since thanks to cycle times up to 800 Hz they identify OK/NOK parts much faster than camera systems would do.
    2. Invariance to contrast: Situations where good contrast ratios are difficult to achieve are challenging for camera-based solutions. Where inspection by height information is feasible, the smart profile sensors from the OX series perform at significantly enhanced process stability.

In short: like today's engineers deploy smart vision sensors for inspection of quality criteria in a camera image, the new sensor class of the OX series can be used to perform inspection tasks based on shapes, edges, gaps, circles, distance, etc. The OX series is even ideal if it is not feasible or difficult to extract the required information out of a gray-scale image.

    Immediately ready for use

The smart profile sensors from Baumer characterize by their ease of use thanks to integrated web interface. It allows for free configuration of up to seven measuring tools with graphical support. Another benefit is live visualization of measurement tasks via web interface. This allows for cross-checking, editing and optimizing the settings straight in the sensor. The compact housing and Power-over-Ethernet ensure easy integration. Combined with their precision down to 5 micrometers, the sensors of the OX series open up new potentials for process-safe and precise solutions.

Compared to alternative solutions, this provides numerous benefits:

    • The smart 2D profile sensors of the OX series are quick and easy to integrate.
    • The function toolbox enables entire profile data processing straight in the sensor.
    • Integrating a profile sensor eliminates the need for lighting, which is a critical aspect in camera-based approaches. The OX laser line ensures robust performance without external lighting.
    • There is no need for data post processing by the control system.

    Conclusion

The smart 2D profile sensors of the OX series can be deployed wherever OK/NOK inspections are based on the evaluation of shapes or features using height information. This new sensor class provides cost-efficient solutions for inspections on shape and dimensional accuracy as well as for presence and dimension checks:

    • Dimensional accuracy of tongue-and-groove joints at floor planks
    • Securely sealed food containers
    • Simplified presence checks in lab automation
