Leak Testing Without Krypton, Helium or Perfluorocarbon

Overview

NorCom Systems, Inc.

NorCom Systems, Inc. is the exclusive manufacturer of  Optical Leak Test (OLT) equipment for over 20 years.

Our advanced technology provides automated in-line, full matrix leak testing of hermetically sealed microelectronic and optoelectronic devices. These innovative systems, eliminate the need for helium mass spectroscopy and gross leak bubble testing by utilizing a patented laser interferometer to simultaneously measure gross and fine leaks in hermetic devices. The equipment provides quantitative leak test results in the industry standard of cc-atm/second helium and is MIL STD approved.

The NorCom 2020 is ideal for testing optoelectronic, semiconductor, and PC board mounted devices for military, aerospace and telecommunication applications. This economical system inspects a single device in seconds for gross leaks, eliminating bubble leak testing, and expensive fluorocarbon usage.

Applications:

  • Military Hi-Rel
  • Microelectronics
  • Optoelectronics
  • Microwave
  • PC board-mounted devices
  • Relay
  • Medical devices
  • Display devices
  • MEMS

  Press Releases

  • Norristown, PA.- Conventional leak testing for identifying gross and fine leaks in electonic packages with Helium Mass Spectometry (HMS), bubble leak testing with Perflourocarbon, or Krypton 85 (Kr-85), can be ineffcient, inaccurate  and expensive.

The supply chain for Kr-85 and Helium has been disrupted by the war in Ukriane, and Perflorocarbons used for gross leak detection are difficult to get given the major producers are exiting the market because it is classified as a forever chemical.

The NorCom Optical Leak Test (OLT) system incorporates a laser interferometer that simultaneously tests for gross and fine leaks in sealed devices while reporting both a pass/fail status, and leak rates for all failed devices.

The OLT system pressurizes the devices while analyzing the package lid deflection and measures the lid motion of leaking devices, then equates the change in internal pressure to a leak rate. The resultant leak rate correlates with other leak test methods in cc/atm of the test gas. The OLT system can use Nitrogen, Clean Dry Air or Helium as the test gas. The method is compliant to

MIL STD 883 and 750 leak test requirements.
