  Press Releases

  • Eden Prairie, MN, April 18, 2024 – Ebatco publishes a white paper on nano/micro scale analysis, characterization and testing of semiconductor and microelectronic materials. Encouraged by the Biden Administration’s CHIPS and Science Act and the booming private semiconductor manufacturing investments, Ebatco, an established and well-recognized lab service power house for nano and microscale materials and device testing, has analyzed the testing needs of semiconductor and microelectronic industries and responded with a suite of contract lab service solutions.

The particular lab services from Ebatco not only claim ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation but also has received admiration and satisfaction feedback from its worldwide customers including many Fortune 500 corporations. Among the lab services, nanomechanical testing (nanoadhesion, nanoindentation, nanocompression, nanoscratch, nanofriction, nanowear) are most popular for ultra-thin film characterizations. Scanning probe microscopy (atomic force microscopy, electrostatic force microscopy, magnetic force microscopy) are great for revealing surface morphology and property distributions. Microscopic contact angle measurements are ideal for wafer surface cleanliness and hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity measurements of micropatterned surfaces. X-ray reflectivity is the best choice for semiconductor surface/interface roughness, film density and thickness measurements. EDS, confocal Raman and FTIR are top selections for unknown chemical identification and distribution mapping. Predominantly, Express Property Mapping (XPM) available through Bruker TI 980 Nanoindenter has gained a significant amount of attention for semiconductor interface mechanical property investigation at sub-micron resolution.

  • Nanoindentation Testing Lab Services
Nanoindentation for Hardness and Elastic Modulus Measurements at Nanoscale for thin films, coatings and small volumes of materials. This technique is well established for mechanical property measurements of non-, semi- and conducting materials....

  • Nanoscience and nanotechnology accelerate the proliferation of novel materials and devices possessing small sizes and low dimensions such as nanomaterials and ultrathin films. Mechanical testing and characterization of these materials have exposed challenges to the traditional hardness and tensile testing and measurement tools. Nanoindentation, may also called instrumented or depth-sensing indentation, is a proven technology for measuring nanomechanical properties of materials and miniaturized devices. Hardness and elastic modulus of a material can be precisely determined through analysis of a load-displacement curve generated by a single nanoindentation test using the Oliver-Pharr method. Adhesion, creep, fracture toughness may also be measured via nanoindentation.

Nanoindentation experiments can be conducted with closed-loop control, with sub-nanometer and nanoNewton resolutions at room, elevated or reduced temperature, submerged in liquid, or under humidity control.

Nanoindentation can work with thin films, coatings, nanoparticles, nanowires, bulk material surfaces and interfaces, MEMS, and electronic and biomedical devices.

  • Nanoscratch Testing Lab Services for Thin Films
Nanoscratch is widely accepted for evaluating mechanical integrity of thin film/substrate systems. It can be used to measure friction between a sample and a scratch probe, critical load of coating interfacial adhesion failure, and scratch resistance....

  • Nanoscratch testing has been widely accepted as a way of evaluating interfacial adhesion of thin film/substrate systems. Failure events may be found where the probe produces delamination, debonding, crack, fracture, or breakthrough at the film/substrate interface. The critical load is defined as the normal force applied to the scratch probe at the time when interfacial failure is detected and can be determined by analyzing the scratch data graphs. The critical load of adhesion failure is a good indication of interfacial adhesion strength. Normally, a higher critical load represents a higher interfacial adhesion.

In addition to determination of the critical load at interfacial failure, the nanoscratch tests can be applied to evaluate material’s resistance to scratch. It can be used to simulate mar resistance by quantifying the minimum load for generating visible scratches or change of surface gloss or by measuring the scratch width and depth under a selected load.

The friction measurement through nanoscratch is deemed very useful in studying thin film and coating frictional characteristics under extremely lighter load or under very high contact pressure.
  • Micro-scale Contact Angle Measurement Lab Services
With its sensitivity of detecting monolayer molecules, contact angle measurement at microscale has been proven to be an indispensable tool to study surface properties of patterned organic light emitting display, microcircuits, micropatterned surfaces...

  • Micro contact angle meter can make liquid drops <30µm in size and picoliter to nanoliter in volume. The instrument comes with orthogonal vertical and horizontal high magnification optics for accurately placing and measuring such small drops on micrometer features, and CCD cameras with high capturing speeds for studying dynamic characteristics of interaction between micron size liquid droplets and solid surfaces.

With its sensitivity of detecting monolayer molecules, contact angle measurement at microscale has been proven to be an ideal tool to study surface properties of single particles, filaments, fibers, medical lead and guide wires, patterned organic light emitting display, microcircuits, microfluidics, micropatterned surfaces, lotus effect, and high-speed ink-jet printing. The high-speed camera is advantageous in determining contact angles as a function of time at millisecond intervals. The recorded feature-rich dynamics of micron size drops is valuable for investigating sensitive surface chemistry, vapor evaporation and adsorption, surface cleanliness, wettability, hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity changes at micro/nano scales.
