  Press Releases

  • Kuraray has received prestigious technical awards in Japan for the groundbreaking water treatment membrane module development. These accolades include the Technology Special Award under the 54th Japan Chemical Industry Association (JCIA) Technology Awards, the 55th Ichimura Prize in Industry for Excellent Achievement, and the 70th Okochi Memorial Technology Prize.

  • Calgon Carbon Corporation (“Calgon Carbon”), a wholly owned subsidiary of Kuraray Co., Ltd. (TYO: 3405) (“Kuraray”) is pleased to share three recent developments that underscore our unwavering commitment to delivering top tier activated carbon products, cutting-edge equipment, and exceptional services to meet the diverse needs of our global customers.

    1. Calgon Carbon Reactivation Study Shows PFAS Removal and Destruction >99.99%

Calgon Carbon conducted a study on the fate of PFAS during the reactivation of activated carbon. Reactivation is a high-temperature thermal process commonly used by municipalities and industrial users to recycle their used activated carbon and destroy >99.99% contaminants it has removed. The study revealed that PFAS compounds are effectively removed from spent carbon through the reactivation process, achieving over 99.99% destruction of PFAS using the company’s furnace and abatement system. These findings, published in the peer-reviewed journal Remediation - The Journal of Environmental Cleanup Costs, Technologies, & Techniques, provide valuable insights into the treatment of PFAS contaminants and support the use of Calgon Carbon’s FILTRASORB® GAC as a reliable technology for removing PFAS. 1. Calgon Carbon Celebrates Plant Expansion in Mississippi

Calgon Carbon has successfully completed a capacity expansion at its Pearlington, Mississippi facility. By adding a second virgin activated carbon production line, the company, known as the world’s largest manufacturer of activated carbon and reactivation services, will now produce approximately 200 million pounds of virgin activated carbon annually from two U.S. based plants. This significant expansion aims to meet the growing demand for activated carbon worldwide, particularly in the fight against PFAS “forever chemicals” in drinking water and wastewater. PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are persistent pollutants that pose significant health risks.  Calgon Carbon’s FILTRASORB® activated carbon plays a crucial role in removing these harmful substances, ensuring cleaner drinking water and safer wastewater management

    1. Calgon Carbon Completes Acquisition of New Mexico-based Benchmark Tank and Bloomfield Machine and Welding

Calgon Carbon successfully acquired the assets of a pressure vessel manufacturer based in Bloomfield, New Mexico. This strategic acquisition encompasses 42 employees and a fully operational production site. The move is expected to significantly bolster the company’s ability to meet the growing demand for activated carbon and related equipment in various applications, including municipal drinking water, wastewater treatment, and the removal of the persistent pollutant known as PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). By integrating the acquired assets, Calgon Carbon aims to enhance its capacity to provide essential solutions for cleaner water and safer environmental management. The addition of skilled personnel and production facilities will further strengthen the company’s commitment to addressing environmental challenges and supporting sustainable practices.

  Products

  • Water treatment membrane GL module
GL module boasts 3 novel technologies to reduce costs in water and wastewater treatment. It is well established and has seen extensive use in a wide range of applications with numerous full-scale installations in the semiconductor industry....

  • The GL module is a cost-saving filtration technology in semiconductor wastewater recycling applications thanks to its three superior characteristics:

    1. Reduced CAPEX and OPEX through High Flux: The super asymmetric structure in its hollow fibers allow for high flux water filtration with fewer modules.
    2. High Suspended Solids (SS) Applicability: A patented structure and air scrubbing technology allows it to handle high SS water with less energy consumption than other technologies, eliminating the need for pretreatment.
    3. High Water Recovery: Utilizing air backwashing technology, it does not use filtrate water for backwashing, significantly reducing wastewater from the filtration system.

GL module has been successfully used to recycle water from various sources including wastewater from CMP, local scrubbers, and back grinding, showcasing its versatility and effectiveness in semiconductor fabrication applications that commonly contain substantial SS from sludges and slurries.

  • Kuraray CMP Pad
Kuraray CMP Pad, innovative pore-less structured pad, has several outstanding benefits such as high-level wafer planarization capability, fewer defects, long life, and slurry use reduction. If you have any interests, please visit Booth No. 5981....

  • Kuraray CMP Pad, innovative pore-less structured pad, provides high-level polishing performance in CMP (Chemical Mechanical Planarization) process of semiconductor manufacturing.

    1. High performance & quality of semiconductor: Kuraray CMP Pad is not easily deformed and can efficiently polish convex areas of wafer steps including wafer edge. It is less likely to cause agglomeration of slurry abrasive grains and polishing debris due to the pore-less structure. It achieves excellent step height reduction and few defects.
    2. Cost reduction & Environmentally friendly at semiconductor manufacturing process: Kuraray CMP Pad has high abrasion resistance. Because it has less stagnation area, abrasive grains in slurry work efficiently. Both advantages are attributed to the pore-less structure. It achieves long pad life and slurry use reduction.
Kuraray CMP Pad can be used in various processes such as ILD, STI, Metal and SiC by controlling the polymer properties and grooves. If you have any challenges of your CMP process or interests in innovative technology, please visit Booth No. 5981.
  • FILTRASORB® Granular Activated Carbon
Calgon Carbon’s FILTRASORB® is globally renowned for its exceptional purification capability for wastewater and groundwater. Our premium granular activated carbon is trusted worldwide as a sustainable solution to address various purification challenges....

  • FILTRASORB® GAC shows superior PFAS-removal performance resulting in a reduced total cost of ownership for end users. It is manufactured in the US using domestic bituminous coal, a unique reagglomeration process, and a highly engineered thermal activation process. This creates a high-quality product with a pore structure effective for a broad range of organic contaminants.

Our equipment services ensure swift deployment of GAC and efficient exchange of spent carbon, embracing the principles of a circular economy. Through our proprietary reactivation process, the spent GAC’s adsorptive capacity is restored and can be safely and cost-effectively recycled back to facilities for continued use—minimizing waste and maximizing resources.

Calgon Carbon has been a pioneer in developing advanced products, systems, and services since the 1940s and is continually positioned to build on its legacy of innovation and industry leadership. Our solutions are available globally and we have technical teams that can support your needs.
